Abandoned

Abandoned, originally uploaded by olystad.

I found this on Flickr a while back when looking for photos of the Lofoten Islands in Norway.

This abandoned house looks quite unwordly set against the backdrop of the red sky and captures the sense of solitude and isolation one can feel on the Lofotens, even despite the reasonably high numbers of tourists that flock there in the summer (I was one of them).

The Lofotens are home to the Mosktraumen or Maleström as featured in the Edgar Allen Poe story, “A Descent into the Malestrom“.  In Poe’s tale, the protagonist narrowly avoids being dragged to his death by the Maleström when his boat gets caught up in it following a late return from a fishing trip.
