About
How silent it seemed now, with only my footsteps to listen to; how silent and how solitary!
Amelia B. Edwards, The Phantom Coach.
A year from winter is an unapologetically whimsical experiment to collect words, pictures and maybe sounds that evoke a certain feeling which is hard to describe but falls somewhere in between melancholy, unease and pleasure; akin to M.R. James’s pleasure “of a certain sort”. You might find it in a desolate landscape, a ghost story, an old photo or in a piece of music. You might experience these feelings when alone, at certain times of the year or in particular places. For me they are most likely to be experienced in solitude, in winter and in quiet places. Solitude and quiet are hard enough to find at the best of times, in winter or any other time of the year, so this is what makes these particular experiences and feelings particularly valuable.
